Cambridge Travel and TransportThe city of Cambridge is well served by the public transport system, which includes an excellent network of buses and trains, providing Cambridge with good connections throughout England. Cambridge is located close to many other interesting towns, cities, tourist attractions and important landmarks, and many visitors in Cambridge also travel outside of the city of Cambridge, into the surrounding areas. Just 96 km / 60 miles north of London, Cambridge is located in the heart of east England and can be easily reached from throughout the United Kingdom.

Renting a car is often the preferred method of transport for excursions from Cambridge and it is relatively easy to travel around the Cambridge area by car. There are a number of major roads situated on the outskirts of Cambridge, which provide fast and convenient routes when travelling both to and from Cambridge.

Cambridge is served by a number of airports, the closest and most convenient of which Cambridge City Airport (CBG) provides convenient air travel to north England, east England, East Anglia and the city of London. Also, the on-site Cambridge Aero Club provides regular pleasure trips over Cambridge city and popular flying lessons. London Airports, including London Heathrow Airport (LHR), London Gatwick Airport (LGW), London Stansted Airport (STN) and London City Airport (LCY)are also within easy travelling distance of Cambridge, by either train, coach or car.

Cambridge is just a short journey up the M11 motorway from south England and London. The A1 and M1 motorway travel to the A14 dual carriageway, linking the north of England to Cambridge city centre. From the east, the A14 dual carriageway travels straight into central Cambridge. There are a number of major roads in the Cambridge area and although the traffic in and out of Cambridge can be heavy during peak commuting hours (07:30 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 18:00), driving in central Cambridge is fairly easy.

Many tourists staying in Cambridge choose to rent cars and these are the best method of transport when travelling outside of the city, to explore the surrounding countryside and nearby towns. There are a number of car parks in and around central Cambridge and these provide useful places to park in the Cambridge area. There are also five highly regarded Cambridge Park and Ride sites located on the outskirts of Cambridge city, providing free car parking and regular bus journeys into central Cambridge. These Cambridge Park and Ride centres operate seven days a week and are located at Babraham Road, Cowley Road, Madingley Road, Newmarket Road and at Trumington.

Cambridge Travel: Cambridge Buses and Cambridge Coaches - Drummer Street, Cambridge, CB1 1NQ, England
Located in Drummer Street, close to Cambridge city centre, Cambridge bus station provides a wide range of transport options in and around the Cambridge area. Cambridge buses and coaches travel throughout Cambridge city centre and travel further afield, to London, the Midlands and East Anglia. Stagecoach Cambus operate Cambridge's popular Park and Ride service and travelling by bus in Cambridge is a very convenient and inexpensive way to travel.

Located on the outskirts of Cambridge city centre on Station Road, Cambridge Train Station is within easy walking distance of central Cambridge and there are also regular buses that travel to the train station. With fast and frequent trains that travel to central London's Liverpool Street and King's Cross train stations in around 50 minutes, Cambridge trains are operated by the West Anglia Great Northern train services. Other train services travel from Cambridge Train Station to Birmingham, Bury St. Edmunds, Ely, Ipswich, King's Lynn, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Peterborough and Sheffield.

Cambridge is well pedestrianized and one of the best ways to travel around Cambridge is by foot. This is an excellent way to see some of Cambridge's numerous tourist attractions, museums, galleries and landmarks. Finding your way around central Cambridge is very straightforward and many of the city's major sights and attractions are within easy walking distance of each other.

They can be easily caught from the taxi rank outside of the Cambridge Train Station. Also in quieter areas of Cambridge, taxis can be ordered by telephone and there are a number of reputable taxi firms that your hotel can recommend. Additional taxi charges in Cambridge are often made for luggage, travel late at night, extra passengers and travel on public holidays.

Cambridge city centre is situated just 107 km / 67 miles from Harwich, where you can travel by boat to the Hook of Holland, Esberj and Cuxhaven. With excellent rail and train links to central Cambridge, this is becoming a popular way to travel to the Cambridge area.

Bicycles are a popular way to travel around recreational areas of Cambridge in particular, and much of Cambridge is generally very flat, although there are some steep hills on the outskirts of Cambridge. There are also numerous cycle trails and pathways throughout Cambridge and the countryside around Cambridge offers some of the most interesting and scenic cycling trails in the whole of the United Kingdom. Many of these cycle routes are based on ancient Cambridge trading routes which date back to Roman times.
